Molecular epidemiology and antimicrobial resistance mechanism of Campylobacter species among children under the age of five with diarrhoea, domestic animals and environmental sources in Amhara National Regional State, Ethiopia Ghent University
This study is aimed at determining the molecular epidemiology and mechanism of antimicrobial resistance in Campylobacter. Specimens from various sources will be analysed using molecular tools. The nutritional status of children will be measured. The study will contribute to the understanding of the epidemiology and transmission dynamics of Campylobacter and help reduce the burden of diarrhoea and malnutrition in children.

Zoonotic Yersinia enterocolitica in pigs: prevalence, epidemiology and risk factor for infection on herd level Ghent University
In a first the prevalence of pathogenic Y. enterocolitica in slaughter pigs will be examined. Moreover the obtained isolates will be genetically compared with human isolates. Furthermore serological testing as an alternative method for screening the presence of an infection as well as risks factor contributing to infection will be examined. In a last step attention will be given to the presence and spreading of genotypes in herds.
Molecular epidemiology and host-virus interactions of hepatitis E virus, a zoonotic pathogen circulating in Europe Ghent University
Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is considered a potentially emerging foodborne viral pathogen in Europe, with the ability of zoonotic transmission. More specifically, genotypes 3 and 4 (gt3 and gt4) have been confirmed as zoonotic genotypes. Study on detection and the zoonotic potential of HEV gt3 and gt4 has been hampered by the lack of a reliable HEV cultivation system, but recent advances have been made using a 3D cell culture. Therefore, a first ...

Reducing research waste and setting ethical priorities in nutrition research: New tools and indicators Ghent University
This research uses an interdisciplinary approach to improve the quality of nutritional epidemiology research. For this purpose, two tools are developed at different stages of research cycle, reporting guidelines at the publication stage, and ethical framework for priority settings at the initiation phase.
Interventions to ensure the best implementation strategy will be taken, and recommendation of use will be disseminated widely. ...

Understanding the molecular mechanisms driving inter-individual response to childhood malnutrition, and its long-term consequences Ghent University
Nutrition in the first 1000 days of life is critical in determining long-term health outcomes. We have previously shown that malnutrition during this fragile window increases the risk for non-communicable diseases (NCDs) during adulthood. Hence, understanding determinants of early-life development is crucial to ensure long-term health.

FasOmics: an integrated multi-omics characterization of the fundamental biology of maternal and newborn health vulnerability in Burkina Faso Ghent University
Modern biological high-throughput technologies have generated a data deluge—from which low and middle-incomes countries (LMICs) have not yet fully benefited. These technologies generate methodologically and biologically distinct omics data types (e.g., genomics, proteomics, metabolomics and most recently exposomics)—each of which imparts different but complementary information. New insight from these omics data can deepen our understanding of ...
