Heterogeneous integration of III-V opto-electronic components on nanophotonic SOI waveguide circuits - the way to active nanophotonics Ghent University
This work deals with the integration of III-V opto-electronic components on top of a silicon-on-insulator material platform to realize complex active/passive photonic integrated circuits, which have their application in diverse high-volume application like Fiber-to-the-Home optical access networks.
Spectroscopy by using a heterogeneous DFB-laser array integrated with wavelength multiplexers on a silicon platform Ghent University
The aim of this project is to develop a new type of heterogeneously integrated microlaser that is sufficiently small and consumes only little power such that it can be combined in large numbers on a single photonic chip. Each laser should have a well-specified wavelength to use the laser array as a spectroscope.
Project Lead Agency ARRS Influence of strongly heterogeneous constitutive properties on the structural integrity of a flawed weld Ghent University
This project aims to improve flaw assessments of structural welds with complex heterogeneous mechanical properties. Central are the development of analytical (slip line field) and finite element models that are able to evaluate the deformation capacity and crack growth behaviour of such welds. These models will be experimentally validated using tension based fracture mechanics tests with optical full-field strain monitoring.
Scalable low-footprint and high-speed coherent transceivers leveraging emergent heterogeneous photonic platforms Ghent University
The proposed project will study, design and ultimately test novel optical modulators for realizing the next generation high-speed coherent transceivers, to be employed in data centers. The recent explosion in demand for more computing power in these data centers is driving operators to demand ever larger transceiver capacities. Micro transfer printing technology will be used to integrate III-V (InP-based) modulator coupons onto a Silicon ...
Novel methodologies to assess the system value of heterogeneous, limitedly controllable demand response in power systems a high penetration of renewable energy sources KU Leuven
Demand response (DR) is considered a possible game-changing technological break-through in the integration of e.g. intermittent solar and wind power. DR allows load to accommodate changes in solar and wind power output by shifting demand in time. A significant number of residential loads contain some form of energy storage, which allows these loads to simultaneously be fully responsive and non-disruptive in terms of the perceived energy ...
Efficient and scalable cascading reasoning over heterogeneous IoT data streams to enable real-time edge analytics Ghent University
We are at a tipping point where more data is being produced by the Internet of Things (IoT) than can be meaningfully processed, as this requires tackling the sheer Volume, Velocity and Variety of the data simultaneously. Semantic web reasoning has proven to be ideal for targeting Variety, enabling the integration of data from various sources. However, reasoning is too computationally expensive, compared to the velocity of the IoT. Therefore, ...
Unraveling the heterogeneous nature of host/pathogen encounters and their role in bacterial pathogenesis. Ghent University
Bacterial infections are among the top death causes worldwide. Besides the emergence and spread of antibiotic resistance, the transient antibiotics tolerance of so-called bacterial persisters, a bacterial subset linked with the recalcitrance of chronic infections and characterized by a distinct metabolism and growth rate, represents yet another substantial health concern. Accordingly, understanding heterogeneous host-pathogen encounters and ...
Cascading Reasoning: an Efficient and Scalable Solution for Decision Making on Heterogeneous Data Streams Ghent University
It is expected that by 2025, the number of connected devices in the Internet of Things (IoT) will exceed 20 billion, where many of these devices are edge devices. We are at a tipping point where more data is being produced than can be meaningfully processed. High value is contained in this data, as real-time processing allows advanced applications in domains like smart cities, pervasive health or industry 4.0. IoT data is challenging to ...
Supporting Pregnancy Care Based on Heterogeneous and Longitudinal Data Analysis KU Leuven
With the advent of information technology in healthcare, data occupy a central place in clinical practice. This digital dependency calls for efficient tools to assist physicians in managing and processing the explosion of data resources. These tools are commonly known as clinical decision support systems (CDSS). They cover a broad range of applications from alerting physicians of drug allergy to the facilitation of administrative data ...
