Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal neurodegenerative disorder characterized by motor neuron (MN) degeneration, cells which ensure brain-muscle communication. This communication is done at the neuromuscular junction (NMJ) level, a specialized synapse between lower MNs and the skeletal muscle.
