Scaling laws for motor-gearbox arrangements Vrije Universiteit Brussel
Research towards (compliant) actuators, especially redundant ones like the Series Parallel Elastic Actuator (SPEA), has led to the development of drive trains, which have demonstrated to increase efficiency, torque-to-mass-ratio, power-to-mass ratio, etc.
In the field of robotics such drive trains can be implemented, enabling technological improvements like safe, adaptable and energy-efficient robots.

Congruent triangles in arrangements of lines Universiteit Gent
We study the maximum number of congruent triangles in finite arrangements of I lines in the Euclidean plane. Denote this number by f (l). We show that f (5) = 5 and that the construction realizing this maximum is unique, f (6) = 8, and f (7) = 14. We also discuss for which integers c there exist arrangements on l lines with exactly c congruent triangles. In parallel, we treat the case when the triangles are faces of the plane graph associated to ...
The stress field of an array of parallel dislocation pile-ups: Implications for grain boundary hardening and excess dislocation distributions KU Leuven
Dislocation pile-ups at grain boundaries determine the back-stress opposing plastic deformation while promoting yielding in neighbouring grains. A regular array of parallel pile-ups of edge dislocations was analysed numerically to determine the equilibrium positions of all dislocations and compared with the result of various simplifications. A model based on infinite low angle boundaries could not reproduce the long-range stress field of the ...
Scaling laws of compliant elements for high energy storage capacity in robotics Vrije Universiteit Brussel
The key component in compliant actuators is the elastic element, typically a spring. Nevertheless, different types of springs have different characteristics in terms of size, weight, maximum allowable force, maximum allowable torque and maximum allowable deflection.
It is however very important to compare them on these requirements, since each application has other demands.
In this paper, the energy storage capacity of different ...

An integrated electron microscopy study of prismatic and multiple sets of fine extinction bands in vein-quartz KU Leuven
Since the end of the nineteenth century fine extinction bands (FEBs) in quartz have been extensively studied by means of a polarized light microscope (PLM), universal-stage, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The last decade FEBs are additionally studied by electron backscatter diffraction orientation imaging (EBSD) on a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and cathodoluminescence (CL) spectroscopy on an electron probe micro-analyzer ...
Modeling Dielectric Relaxation in Polymer Glass Simulations: Dynamics in the Bulk and in Supported Polymer Films KU Leuven
We perform molecular dynamics Simulations to study the dielectric relaxation of a head-spring model for a polymer melt in the bulk and in Supported films. By assigning dipole moments parallel and perpendicular to the backbone of all chains ill the completed simulation trajectories, we calculate the dielectric spectra of so-called type-A polymers which exhibit relaxation processes due to the local motion of chain segments ("segmental mode") and ...
Crystal structures of three N-(pyridine-2-carbon-yl)pyridine-2-carboxamides as potential ligands for supramolecular chemistry Universiteit Gent
The synthesis and single-crystal X-ray structures of three N-(pyridine-2-carbonyl)pyridine-2-carboxamide imides, with or without F atoms on the 3-position of the pyridine rings are reported, namely, N-(pyridine-2-carbonyl)pyridine-2-carboxamide, C12H9N3O2 (1), N-(3-fluoropyridine-2carbonyl)pyridine-2-carboxamide, C12H8FN3O2 (2), and 3-fluoro-N-(3-fluoropyridine-2-carbonyl)pyridine-2-carboxamide, C12H7F2N3O2 (3). The above-mentioned compounds ...
Local probing of the vortex-antivortex dynamics in superconductor/ferromagnet hybrid structures KU Leuven Universiteit Antwerpen
In-plane ferromagnetic bars, densely packed in a linear array underneath a superconducting bridge, create two types of vortex chains of opposite polarity inside the superconductor. In this work we investigate both experimentally and theoretically the dynamics of these vortex chains as a function of an external magnetic field for two different arrangements of magnetic moments, namely parallel and antiparallel. The theoretical approach, based on ...
