Cultural transfers in the Middle Ages: monasticism as a generator and mediator of 'secular' practices of social interaction and entertainment (Western Europe, 11th-15th centuries) Ghent University
This project will look at the phenomenon of cultural exchange based on the study of the role of medieval monastic groups in the creation and dissemination of entertainment games. Monastic groups incorporated elements of play from secular culture and transformed them to make them suitable for use inside the monastery and usable in the dissemination of monastic attitudes in the secular world.

According to (inter)national literature, disabled people were well integrated within their communities until the mid-19th century, when as a result of the industrial revolution and medicalization process, they became an oppressed group. This research project intends to subject this hypothesis to an empirical inquiry and aims to gain more insight into the social position of deaf people, in East-Flanders (1750-1900).
An Archaeology of Comparative Colonialism: material culture, institutions, and cultural change in Malta, c. AD 1530–1910 Ghent University
The project aims to produce a novel, material culture-led narrative of daily life in Malta, AD 1530-1910. Archaeological analyses of artefacts and space shall be integrated with archival evidence to produce a social interpretation, which shall be viewed through the prisms of colonial institutions and identity formation. The project culminates in a diachronic comparison of colonialism under three ruling groups.

This project aims to study patterns in a corpus of paratexts from Byzantine manuscripts, to elucidate the interconnectedness of material book production, motivations for textual transmission, and linguistic developments. This will aid, and be aided by, the development of new digital tools, equipped to detect variations and patterns in a fluid, fragmented, and heavily entangled textual corpus.
