Deep-learning data fusion for patient screening and clustering from genomics liquid biopsies and its application for presymptomatic cancer detection and stratified medicine KU Leuven
My PhD research relates to the design of an Artificial Intelligence (AI) framework for learning complex relations between the DNA profile of a liquid biopsy (i.e., DNA extracted from a blood sample) and the diagnosis, prognosis, or relapse of a tumor. This AI framework will be able to continuously integrate information from DNA profiles from tens of thousands of liquid biopsies. In particular, it will allow building models for the early ...
Activity-based screening of opioids in biological matrices as a new concept in forensic toxicology Ghent University
Over 700 new psychoactive substances (NPS) have appeared on the worldwide drug market during the last decade as reported by the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction. Their consumption poses a serious problem for public order and public health. The number of NPS, their chemical diversity, the rate at which they emerge and the lack of commercial availability of reference standards, makes it particularly challenging for the ...
Combining CRISPR screening and single-cell RNA sequencing to unravel the mechanisms of T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia KU Leuven
In this project we aim to use a CRISPR/Cas9 inactivation screen of 83 genes that are recurrently inactivated in T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (T-ALL). We will perform the screen in combination with single-cell RNA-sequencing, so that we can use the effect on gene expression as a read-out for the screen.
In the first part, we will investigate the impact of single gene perturbations on the cellular processes and aim to ...
Beyond Definitive Screening Designs KU Leuven
Gaining competitive advantage requires today’s businesses and industries to innovate and improve at an increasing speed. Modern products and production processes are more complex than ever, so optimizing product formulations/compositions and production process settings requires solving high-dimensional decision problems. An important management science tool to cope with this task is statistical design of experiments. A design is a plan to ...

New developments in Preimplantation Genetic Testing: towards noninvasive, comprehensive chromosome screening Ghent University
Preimplantation genetic testing (PGT) is performed during an in vitro fertilisation (IVF) treatment and aims to prevent the birth of a child with a genetic disorder or to increase the implantation potential for carriers of balanced chromosomal rearrangements. Recent technological advances have revolutionized the field, but have also raised several new questions. The introduction of genome-wide technologies enables comprehensive chromosome ...
Mapping dynamic transcription factor hierarchies using pooled CRISPR screening with single-cell epigenome readout KU Leuven
Cellular state transitions, such as those occurring during cancer progression, involve transcriptional switches that are controlled by specific combinations of transcription factors. How such dynamic processes are encoded in the genome sequence as “regulatory programs”, and how transcription factors control the epigenome and activate specific enhancers, remains largely unknown. Single-cell transcriptomics provide a unique opportunity to ...
Development of a superior in vitro model for drug hepatoxicity screening through 3D printing of crosslinkable biopolymers. Ghent University
Developing drugs is a time- and cost-intensive process. During drug development, different phases are required for a drug to finally reach the market. During the discovery and development phase, thousands of compounds are synthesized, of which the most appropriate reach the preclinical phase. During this phase, in vitro and in vivo tests are performed in an attempt to track toxicity. Due to ethical as well as economic constraints, there is a ...
