Use of a tool-set by Pan troglodytes troglodytes to obtain termites (Macrotermes) in the periphery of the Dja Biosphere Reserve, southeast Cameroon Koninklijke Maatschappij voor Dierkunde van Antwerpen Instituut voor Tropische Geneeskunde
At the northern periphery of the Dja Biosphere Reserve (southeastern Cameroon) we recorded a new use of a tool-set by Pan troglodytes troglodytes to prey on Macrotermes muelleri, M. renouxi, M. lilljeborgi, and M. nobilis. We recovered 79 puncturing sticks and 47 fishing probes at 17 termite nests between 2002 and 2005. The mean length of the puncturing sticks (n = 77) and fishing probes (n = 45) was 52 cm. and 56 cm, respectively, and the mean ...
Insect prey characteristics affecting regional variation in chimpanzee tool use Instituut voor Tropische Geneeskunde Koninklijke Maatschappij voor Dierkunde van Antwerpen
It is an ongoing interdisciplinary pursuit to identify the factors shaping the emergence and maintenance of tool technology. Field studies of several primate taxa have shown that tool using behaviors vary within and between populations. While similarity in tools over spatial and temporal scales may be the product of socially learned skills, it may also reflect adoption of convergent strategies that are tailored to specific prey features. Much ...
Proximate and ultimate factors regulating reproduction and division of labour in insect societies KU Leuven
A major outstanding question in evolutionary biology is to explain why previously independently replicating subunits teamed up to form higher levels of organization, such as eukaryotic cells, multicellular organisms or animal societies. The evolution of eusociality in insects, marked by the evolution of a reproductive division of labour between queens and workers and complex forms of division of labour among the workers themselves, stands as one ...
Combining bio-inspiration and ecodesign KU Leuven
Prescriptive ecodesign tools aim to aid designers in creating more sustainable designs by providing them with general recommendations, relying on the designer to adapt and convert such recommendations into a creative concept. This class of ecodesign methods relies on - and is limited by - the creativity and previous knowledge of the designer. In contrast, bio-inspired design creates new concepts using analogical transfer from existing solutions ...
Emended descriptions of Bacillus sporothermodurans and Bacillus oleronius with the inclusion of dairy farm isolates of both species Instituut voor Landbouw-, Visserij- en Voedingsonderzoek Universiteit Gent
Bacillus sporothermodurans is an industrially important micro-organism because of its ability to produce endospores which resist ultra-high temperature (UHT) and industrial sterilization processes. It was described by Pettersson et al. (1996) [Pettersson, B., Lembke, F., Hammer, P., Stackebrandt, E. & Priest, F. G. (1996). Int J Syst Bacteriol 46, 759-764] based on seven genetically homogeneous isolates all from UHT milk. Bacillus oleronius, ...
Fish spawning migration, Young-of-the-Year (YOY) fish survival, and food web modeling in Lake Tana, Ethiopia Universiteit Hasselt
Under the current anthropogenic pressures on the ecosystem, the Lake Tana fish species suffer from pollution, habitat destruction, and excessive fishing. It is crucial to develop an effective conservation and management strategy for the lake and its tributary rivers. This requires an understanding of the feeding and reproductive ecology of the fish taxa of concern, namely the species belonging to the genus Labeobarbus, which includes an endemic ...
Markets of concentration permits: The case of manure policy Instituut voor Landbouw-, Visserij- en Voedingsonderzoek Universiteit Gent
Concentration permits are regarded as an interesting policy tool for regulating emissions where, besides absolute amounts, also local concentration is important. However, effects of governance structure, trading system and possible policy interventions in the permits' allocation are not yet well analysed and understood. This paper explores in how far tradable fertilisation standards can be seen as a concentration permit trading (CPT) system ...
Functional genomics in zebrafish permits rapid characterization of novel platelet membrane proteins KU Leuven
In this study, we demonstrate the suitability of the vertebrate Danio rerio (zebrafish) for functional screening of novel platelet genes in vivo by reverse genetics. Comparative transcript analysis of platelets and their precursor cell, the megakaryocyte, together with nucleated blood cell elements, endothelial cells, and erythroblasts, identified novel platelet membrane proteins with hitherto unknown roles in thrombus formation. We determined ...
