The contribution of small forest remnants in agricultural landscapes to pollination services Ghent University
Western European forest landscapes are highly fragmented. These fragments can, however, deliver important ecosystem services. Pollination is among the most important, as 35% of the global crop production depends on it. Wild pollinators, however, have declined the past years because of the disappearance of semi-natural habitat. This research attempts to assess the immportance of these forest fragments for wild pollinators.

Ndunga-le: a poorly known Mbaic (Ubangi) linguistic enclave in the CongUbangi watershed Ghent University
Central Africa’s Congo-Ubangi watershed is a major hotbed of linguistic, cultural and human genetic diversity. One of the hallmarks of this region are Ubangi linguistic enclaves geographically far removed from one another and surrounded by Bantu and/or Central Sudanic speakers. Ubangi is at present a highly debated geneaological group. These isolated linguistic pockets appear to resist language shift and are often considered as remnants of ...
Towards efficient and detailed analysis of turbidite records for geo- and climate hazard reconstructions – An integrated approach combining X-ray CT, magnetic, grain-size and geochemical analysis Ghent University
Turbidite records can provide valuable information on the past occurrence and magnitude of several types of geo- and climate hazards. They have been used to reconstruct earthquake recurrence and rupture patterns, flood and lahar histories, rockfall events etc. Furthermore, detailed analysis of turbidite sedimentary structures, fabric and texture has the potential to allow reconstructing sequences and timelines of the geo- and climate hazards, ...
Evolution of dwarf galaxies: a stellar populations perspective Ghent University
Though Big Data has become common in many domains nowadays, the challenges to develop efficient and automated mining of the ever increasing data sets by new generations of data scientists are eminent. These challenges span wide swathes of society, business and research. Astronomers with their high-tech observatories are historically at the forefront of this field, but obviously, the impact in e.g. commercial applications, security, ...

Crystal mush processes in basaltic volcanoes KU Leuven
It is now commonly accepted that volcanic rocks represent erupted products from the mobile part of crystal + liquid reservoirs, called crystal mushes, which crystallize to form plutons. Crystal mushes therefore represent the sites of magma crystallization at depth and witness deep differentiation processes as well as the mechanisms of crystal-liquid segregation prior to eruption. Interestingly, many lava flows worldwide contain remnants of ...
