Identification of Circulating Fibrocytes and Dendritic Derivatives in Corneal Endothelium of Patients With Fuchs' Dystrophy KU Leuven
Fuchs' endothelial corneal dystrophy (FECD) is a degenerative eye disorder affecting 4% of Americans older than 40. It is the leading indication for corneal endothelial (CE) transplantation for which there is a global donor shortage. This study aimed to gain further insight into the pathophysiology of FECD and identify targets for nonsurgical therapy.
High performing immobilized Baeyer-Villiger monooxygenase and glucose dehydrogenase for the synthesis of epsilon-caprolactone derivative KU Leuven
© 2019 Elsevier B.V. The industrial application of Baeyer-Villiger monooxygenases (BVMOs) is typically hindered by stability and cofactor regeneration considerations. The stability of biocatalysts can be improved by immobilization. The goal of this study was to evaluate the (co)-immobilization of a thermostable cyclohexanone monooxygenase from Thermocrispum municipale (TmCHMO) with a glucose dehydrogenase (GDH) from Thermoplasma acidophilum for ...
Sugar and SPY(ce): Large-scale identification of SPINDLY-dependent O-fucosylation targets in Arabidopsis Hasselt University
Besides their essential roles as substrates for carbon and energy metabolism, sugars also act in signal transduction, coordinating developmental and metabolic processes with nutrient availability. In animals, posttranslational modifications of nucleocytoplasmic proteins with β-N-acetylglucosamine (GlcNAc; an amide derivative of glucose) by O-GlcNac transfer-ase (OGT) play a key role in nutrient sensing (Liu et al. 2015). The Arabidopsis ...
Safety of 2 '-fucosyllactose (2'-FL) produced by a derivative strain (APC199) of Corynebacterium glutamicum ATCC 13032 as a novel food pursuant to Regulation (EU) 2015/2283 Ghent University
Following a request from the European Commission, the EFSA Panel on Nutrition, Novel Foods and Food Allergens (NDA) was asked to deliver an opinion on 2 '-fucosyllactose (2'-FL) as a novel food (NF) pursuant to Regulation (EU) 2015/2283. The NF is mainly composed of the human-identical milk oligosaccharide (HiMO) 2'-FL, but it also contains D-lactose, L-fucose, 3-fucosyllactose, difucosyllactose, D-glucose and D-galactose. The NF is produced by ...
Safety of 3-fucosyllactose (3-FL) produced by a derivative strain of Escherichia coli BL21 (DE3) as a novel food pursuant to Regulation (EU) 2015/2283 Ghent University
Following a request from the European Commission, the EFSA Panel on Nutrition, Novel Foods and Food Allergens (NDA) was asked to deliver an opinion on 3-fucosyllactose (3-FL) as a novel food (NF) pursuant to Regulation (EU) 2015/2283. The NF is mainly composed of the human-identical milk oligosaccharide (HiMO) 3-FL, but it also contains d-lactose, l-fucose, d-glucose and d-galactose, and a small fraction of other related saccharides. The NF is ...
A metabolic gene survey pinpoints fucosylation as a key pathway underlying the suppressive function of regulatory T cells in cancer Ghent University Flanders Institute for Biotechnology KU Leuven
A metabolic CRISPR-Cas9 screen reveals the important role of fucosylation in the suppressive function of Tregs. Measuring fucosylation in Tregs has the potential to aid in the discovery of relevant prognostic markers for cancer patients. Forkhead box P3 (Foxp3)-expressing regulatory T cells (Treg) are the guardians of controlled immune reactions and prevent the development of autoimmune diseases. However, in the tumor context, their increased ...
1,3a,6a-Triazapentalene derivatives: Synthesis and Spectroscopy KU Leuven
1,3a,6a-Triazapentalene (TAP) is a novel fluorophore that has received a substantial amount of interest upon its introduction over the last two decades due to its small size. Based on the reported structures, TAPs can be categorized into two types: (1) (hetero)aryl-fused and (2) non-fused bicyclic TAPs. During the past decade, the bicyclic TAPs have become an interesting class of fluorophores because of their excellent fluorescent properties ...
Amides of pyrrole- and thiophene-fused anthraquinone derivatives: A role of the heterocyclic core in antitumor properties KU Leuven
Heteroarene-fused anthraquinone derivatives represent a class of perspective anticancer drug candidates capable of targeting multiple vital processes including drug resistance. Taking advantage of previously demonstrated potential of amide derivatives of heteroarene-fused anthraquinones, we herein dissected the role of the heterocyclic core in antitumor properties. A new series of naphtho[2,3-f]indole-3- and anthra[2,3-b]thiophene-3-carboxamides ...
Novel pyrazole derivatives: synthesis and evaluation of anti-angiogenic activity KU Leuven
The synthesis of a series of novel trisubstituted pyrazole derivatives and their PIFA-mediated conversion to molecules bearing the fused pyrazolo[4,3-c]quinoline ring system is reported. The anti-angiogenic activity of these compounds was evaluated by using in vitro assays for endothelial cell proliferation and migration, and in the chicken chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) assay. Compounds containing the fused pyrazolo[4,3-c]quinoline motifs ...
