Mwalimu Nyerere’s Fundamental Option for Poor People: How he was Influenced by his Christian Faith and how he Resolved the Tension Between Development and Liberation Paradigms. KU Leuven
This research project aims at examining (1) whether Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere (the first President of Tanzania) has really based his policy on a fundamental option for poor people and for people-centred development, and, (2) if this is the case (which is our hypothesis), in what regards he was influenced by Christian faith and ethics. The project also examines the role of the both the paradigms of development and liberation in his ...
Democratizing citizenship. On the tension between radical democracy and citizenship KU Leuven
The premise of this project is the observation that classical accounts of citizenship – focusing on citizenship as a status or habitus – fail to take note of political actors that appropriate the language of citizenship outside of the dominant institutions of citizenship. This is why this project will take cue from Étienne Balibar and Engin Isin: according to these philosophers, we should stop thinking of citizenship as a status that is (or ...
Theology of Religions as a Process of Discernment: A Critical Appraisal of the Dialectical Tension between Jacques Dupuis' Theology of Religions and the Theology of Dominus Iesus. KU Leuven
The current theological scholarship on Jacques Dupuis' paradigm and Dominus Iesus concentrate either on a positive appraisal of their positions on the one hand, or on a critical assessment of certain aspects in them on the other hand. While acknowledging the contributions made by the existing corpus, my project seeks to go beyond the appreciators, faultfinders and one-sided approaches to both Dupuis’ paradigm and the Declaration. The ...
Material Variability across the Scales in Unidirectional Composites - Virtual Material Characterisation under Longitudinal Tension KU Leuven
Their high stiffness, strength and low density make composite materials an excellent choice for lightweight structural components. However, the high performance of these materials comes at the cost of complex mechanical characterisation, certification and design. For this reason, composite components are often designed applying large safety factors, limiting their lightweight potential.
Virtual testing is a cheaper and faster ...
Multi-scale Approach for Fatigue Loading of Cracked Steel Fibre Reinforced Concrete under Tension KU Leuven
The limited tensile resistance of concrete stimulated the development of steel fibre reinforced concrete (SFRC), consisting of a concrete matrix with randomly distributed steel fibres and characterised by an improved post-cracking behaviour. Despite the various non-structural SFRC applications, its use is still restricted with respect to its potentials, which is mainly caused by the lack of international design codes. Moreover, structural ...
SPRAAK2TAAL: extraction of tension and idelological context from political speeches - research on the integration of speech and language processing. KU Leuven
The use of laryngeal elektromyography and mechanography in the assessment of patients with functional voice disorders and the evaluation of circumlaryngeal manual therapy in patients with muscle tension dysphonia Ghent University
Using laryngeal EMG and MMG, biomechanic and physiologic backgrounds of functional voice disorders will be examined. These techniques will be used for the first time to objectify muscle tension disorders of extralarygeal muscles. The use of LEMg and MMG will be introduced as a diagnostic technique for selection of patients and also for to objectify the therapeutic effect of circumlaryngeal manual therapy.
A tension between the design and reception of learning environments in higher education: Instructional knowledge as an influencing factor KU Leuven
Contrary to prevailing assumptions, students do not blindly adhere to the expectations and prescriptions imposed on them by the learning environments they encounter. Instead, they appeal to their prior knowledge to interpret these expectations and prescriptions, adjusting their behaviors accordingly. As such, research suggests that students’ knowledge of micro-level education – referred to here as their ‘instructional knowledge’ – often ...
