Violence, public order and the state in South Asia: Understanding the role of political violence in governance in Bangladesh Ghent University
This research project wants to understand the role of non-‐state violent actors in shaping governance in Bangladesh. Using a non-normative approach to both political violence and governance and employing both qualitative and quantitative methods, this project wants to contribute to a better understanding of the role of violence in everyday governance and the working of the state in South Asia.

This project analyses the impact of long-term conflict on local governance in two cases: the secessionist Naga armed struggle (Northeast India) and the Maoist Naxalite conflict (Central India). The aim is to provide a political ethnography of governance in 'rebellious society', by conducting fieldwork in areas where the state and the rebels have been trying to set up governance structures.
