The strong presence of a normative, deficit-oriented perspective in research on special interests has led to a one-sided and poor understanding of the phenomenon. This project aims to actively respond to this lack by using ethnographic methods and recent psychoanalytical theory to study the function, meaning and experience of special interests in the lives of people with autism spectrum disorder.

Self-regulation in Khat Use: Ethnographic Study in Ethiopia Ghent University
The study focuses on self-regulation in khat use in Ethiopia. It uses a qualitative, community-based ethnographic approach to understand khat users’ definitions and reasons for controlled/uncontrolled use and harm reduction techniques they employ to prevent or minimize the negative effects of chewing. The study also looks into the perspectives of khat chewers and other stakeholders on khat regulation.
Citizenship practices among undocumented immigrant mothers: A comparative ethnographic case study in Flanders (Belgium) and France Ghent University
Which citizenship practices for undocumented mothers? This is the central question of this study and argues that despite a position as legal and cultural outsiders this women are creating new practices of citizenship that go beyond nation, race and class. Through their mothering as care-work and daily encounters with others, the undocumented mothers create new hybrid identities and multiple belongings.

Impact activities for the research project: “Property and Democratic Citizenship: The Impact of Moral Assumptions, Policy Regulations, and Market Mechanisms on Experiences of Eviction” (ERC-CoG-2017-PaDC-771795). Ghent University
These funds will be used for public outreach and impact activities related to the above research project which explores the impact of property regimes on experiences of citizenship across five countries: Greece, Netherlands, Spain, United Kingdom and United States. Through an ethnographic study of conflicts over property this research assesses the role of property in contemporary models of democratic governance.
Language and legal counselling: A linguistic ethnography of multilingual support in the legal assistance to asylum seekers in Belgium Ghent University
This project proposes a linguistic-ethnographic study of multilingual practices in legal advice consultations with asylum seekers in Belgium. It investigates how the multilingual resources and strategies used by lawyers and their minority language clients are valued, managed and legitimized in these consultations, thereby aiming to develop more nuanced understandings of language support needs in migration-related service encounters.
