Exploring the genotoxic potential of nanoparticles using amorphous silica nanoparticles Vrije Universiteit Brussel
Nanomaterials, generally defined as materials with at least one dimension smaller than 100 nm, have become of great interest for industrial and biomedical applications in the last years. With this increased interest, concerns have been raised about their potential adverse health effects. Several reports have indicated that these "new" materials induce effects different from their micrometer-size counterparts. Therefore the need for hazard ...
Sol-gel hot injection synthesis of ZnO nanoparticles into a porous silica matrix and reaction mechanism Vrije Universiteit Brussel Universiteit Antwerpen
Despite the enormous interest in the properties and applications of porous silica matrix, only a few attempts have been reported to deposit metal and metal oxide nanoparticles (NPs) inside the porous silica matrix. We report a simple approach (i.e. sol-gel hot injection) for insitu synthesis of ZnO NPs inside a porous silica matrix. Control of the Zn:Si molar ratio, reaction temperature, pH value, and annealing temperature permits formation of ...
Size-Dependent Cytotoxicity of Monodisperse Silica Nanoparticles in Human Endothelial Cells Vrije Universiteit Brussel
The effect that monodisperse amorphous spherical silica particles of different sizes have on the viability of endothelial cells (EAHY926 cell line) is investigated. The results indicate that exposure to silica nanoparticles causes cytotoxic damage (as indicated by lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) release) and a decrease in cell survival (as determined by the tetrazolium reduction, MTT, assay) in the EAHY926 cell line in a dose-related manner. ...

Assessment of side-effects by Ludox TMA silica nanoparticles following a dietary exposure on the bumblebee Bombus terrestris. Vrije Universiteit Brussel Universiteit Gent KU Leuven
We assessed lethal and sublethal side-effects of Ludox TMA silica nanoparticles on a terrestrial pollinator, Bombus terrestris (Linnaeus), via a dietary exposure. Dynamic light scattering analysis confirmed that silica Ludox TMA nanoparticles remained in suspension in the drinking sugar water. Exposure of bumblebee microcolonies during 7 weeks to the different nanoparticle concentrations (high: 34, 170 and 340 mg/l and low: 34 and 340 μg/l) did ...
Compressive behavior of epoxy resin filled with silica nanoparticles at high strain rate Universiteit Gent
The aim of this paper is to study the compressive behavior of a typical aeronautical epoxy composite matrix filled with silica nanoparticles at high strain rates. The weight percentage of the silica nanoparticles was 1% of the epoxy resin and the average size of the nanoparticles was approx. 800 nm, as measured by SEM image analysis. Reference quasi-static experiments (at strain rates 0.0008, 0.008, and 0.08 s-1) and high strain rate experiments ...
Ecotoxicity of silica nanoparticles to the green alga Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata: importance of surface area Universiteit Gent
To date, (eco) toxicological information on industrial nanoparticles is very limited. In the present study, the hypothesis that the ecotoxicity of nanoparticles (NPs) is related to their surface area and not to their mass was tested using a freshwater green algal species. Particle diameter and morphology were assessed using light scattering and electron microscopy techniques. To assess the toxicity of silica (SiO2) nanoparticles, the growth ...
Effect of silica nanoparticles on the compressive behavior of RTM6 epoxy resin at different strain rates Universiteit Gent
RTM6 epoxy resin is considered the main matrix material for high performance aeronautical grade composites which can be subjected to impact loads. Research efforts have been spent to improve the strength and the overall impact properties of these resins. One of the routes followed focuses on the enhancement of the epoxy resin by the addition of rigid nanoparticles with different weight percentages and sizes. The purpose of this work is to study ...
