In the late 19th century, the introduction of Portland cement led to innovative compositions towards decorative rendering mortars. These finishes were often developed as a substitute for other, more expensive materials, like sandstone. In order to create an almost perfect imitation of a natural stone masonry, imitation renders were frequently applied on façades.
