A macrogenetic approach to study participatory performance

Boekbijdrage - Boekhoofdstuk Conferentiebijdrage

How can we better understand the aesthetics of participatory performance through a genetic approach? My doctoral dissertation has inquired into performer training to better understand how a performer deploys tactics to mould audience participation into an aesthetic form. To identify what tactics performers use, I have followed a macrogenetic methodology, complemented with an accompanying approach. Interlocking both approaches, I have participated in training events that meander in between different creative processes and held a position in relation to the artists which consisted of constant dialogue. This accompanying macrogenetic approach has allowed me to capture elements of a training process that lack material documentation and gain insight into the practice of an artist, instead of a single creative process. This paper zooms in on the macrogenetic aspect of the methodology, which has served my research, but may also be of use to other genetic studies.
