Techniques de récolte et exploitation durable des chenilles comestibles dans la région de Yangambi, RD Congo Harvesting techniques and sustainable exploitation of edible caterpillars in the Yangambi region, DR Congo

Tijdschriftbijdrage - Tijdschriftartikel

This study, which is part of an approach to the management of edible caterpillars and their host plants, sought to understand the exploitation of caterpillars and their host plants by the population of Yangambi and the possible consequences on their production, sustainability and environmental preservation. A survey using a pre-designed questionnaire was carried out among 140 randomly selected respondents and focus groups were set up to determine the species mentioned. The survey identified 14 taxa of edible caterpillars and 18 host plants species. The caterpillars were harvested in the primary forest and they are collected there at all stages of their development. The arsenal of harvesting techniques used, apart from collecting and shaking, contribute nothing to the sustainable management of edible caterpillars and their host plants. The biodiversitydestroying techniques used were: climbing, cutting off branches, felling host plants, harvesting cocoons and chrysalises buried in the soil. The exploitation of host plants, poor harvesting techniques and climate change were the main factors causing the scarcity of caterpillars, which constitute a socio-economy threat as well as a threat to food supplies.
