Collective Memory in Olympic Volunteering of Birds' Nest Generation as a Potential Olympic Legacy

Adopting 2008 Beijing Olympic and Paralympic Games as a case study, this research explored volunteers' collective memory as an unplanned event legacy. Qualitative data were collected via oral materials from the in-depth interviews with 15 volunteers. Using the NVivo 11 software, a grounded analysis was performed. The findings indicate that volunteers’ collective memory on Olympic experience is shaped, guided, and directed by the slogan of the Olympic Volunteer program “I participate, I contribute and I enjoy”. The memory content is framed by both the socialist core value and the version of Chinese volunteer service, showing the approval and the pursue of the collective idea “tired but happy”. The active online group and the posting online behavior present the strong role identity as an Olympic volunteer and the collective sense of belonging. To conclude, this study elaborated upon how collective memory as a potential legacy can assist in realizing the Olympic legacy for 2022 Beijing Olympic Winter Games in China.
