The Island Approach (TIA): a suited projective technique for evaluating a bevy of attributes

Boekbijdrage - Boekhoofdstuk Conferentiebijdrage

In this paper, we present The Island Approach (TIA), a projective technique that finds its origin in Survivor Island (Kalter, 2016) and is especially suitable for evaluating a large number of attributes or features of an innovation or service. We illustrate the procedures of the island approach based on the evaluation of user requirements and scenarios in HRADIO, a Horizon 2020 funded project that aims to leverage the full potential of hybrid radio. In this project, we apply a living lab-approach to determine which ideas are relevant to develop as features or services in real life. We successfully conducted the island approach in co-creation workshops to perform a qualitative evaluation of 29 hybrid radio scenarios. We evaluate TIA itself as well, summarize its strengths and weaknesses, reflect on our experiences while conducting its procedures and provide practical tips and guidelines to implement TIA. We conclude that the island approach is a useful and suited evaluation tool for the learning curve and maturity of innovations (Jespersen, 2008). In addition, we illustrate how TIA could contribute to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDG Knowledge Hub, 2018).
