The Invisible City

Boek - Boek

'The Invisible City' exhibits the results of the third case which explores the three-steps methodology, which is being developed within the research project ‘The Architect as third person narrator - Tracing the deep significance of built heritage through encounters with undisclosed protagonists’ (Gantois, Gisèle 2014-2018, KU Leuven) to enable the designer to project himself into the site to investigate. He/she acquires new knowledge by linking own experiences with existing expertise. This allows the designer to come to better and socially better-accepted projects of new construction or reconversion. The Ghost Client can be seen as a metaphor for the deeper meaning of a place, which is not always immediately visible but often constitutes the real challenge of a project. It is fundamental to understand this meaning in order to deal with heritage in a social sustainable way. This meaning can never be discovered by only doing formal research. We must also experience the place by joining those who experience the place daily and by re-walking their lines of walk. Seven students of the International Master of Architecture, Faculty of Architecture, KU Leuven, campus Ghent take up the challenge of uncovering the particular layering of the city of Ypres by the three-steps research methodology.
