The present article offers a close study of three successive editions of Suetonius’s Lives of the Twelve Caesars printed in the Basle Officina Henricpetrina between 1537 and 1560. Though conspicuously absent from its catalogue compiled by Frank Hieronymus (1997), these editions are of particular importance to the student of Suetonius’s Caesars for presenting a synoptic view of the work’s entire exegetical tradition up to the mid-sixteenth century. By examining both the commentaries and the other paratexts included in Henricus Petri’s editions of Suetonius, this article seeks to illustrate his publishing program and printing strategies, exploring which features were innovative and which were copied from earlier editions. In addition, it aims to shed new light on the transmission and reception of Suetonius’s imperial biographies by investigating the aspects of his collection discussed and the image of his work sketched by its Early Modern commentators, editors, and publishers.
