Development of tools for the sustainable water quality management in subtropical catchments subjected to multiple stressors. KU Leuven
South Africa has one of the most progressive and holistic water laws that aims to achieve a fair allocation of water for sustainable development. This Act focusses on required water quantity and quality to sustain
ecosystem functioning and services. However only water quantity tools are well developed and implemented and there is a lack of quality assessment tools. As some land use practices coupled to abstraction and

Towards intelligent optimisation and understanding of the multistage production process of frozen par-fried potato fries, considering variable incoming potatoes, the final quality of the Belgian fry and process water management (Intelligent-FRY) KU Leuven
The overall objective is to understand the impact of the multi-stage production process of frozen pre-fried fries on the quality of consumable Belgian fries and water management requirements, as a function of the variable characteristics of the incoming potato. This insight will be provided by thorough research into the physicochemical impact of each industrial processing step and the parameters applied, in combination with research into the ...
Win-win protein: reconciling fish protein generation and water quality management KU Leuven
In the proposed project we aim to achive a win-win situation combining increased food security and increased water quality in the reservoirs. To achieve this we will investigate how we can harvest locally available GARRA fish biomass from reservoirs to prepare GARRA-based chicken feed that can be used to locally breed chicken for consumption in Ethiopië.
Research on the management of crop residues in vegetable crops and potential of crops and crop rotations with a view to the water quality objectives of the Action Programme 2011-2014 (MAP4) Ghent University
This study aims to evaluate different slopes of management of crop residues in the broad sense with regard to the environmental impact (avoiding loss of nutrients), technical feasibility and economic consequences. The potential of greetings in conjunction with catch crops or alternative cultivation rotations with vegetables should be examined in this context. The results of the study are to result in a code of good practice for vegetable ...
Win-win protein: reconciling fish protein generation and water quality management. Ghent University
Garra and tambaqui are endemic fish to Ethiopia and the Amazon. We evaluated the performance, metabolic and functional effects of garra meal as feed on broiler chickens. We evaluated the effect of fish meat preservation methods on nutritive value of tambaqui fish and investigated the compatibility of beet pulp as nutrient on functional and metabolic effects of cultured tambaqui fish.
Water quality characterization and biosorption for point-of-use drinking water treatment in Athi River Basin, Kenya Ghent University
Scarcity of (good quality) water is a major challenge in Kenya. Because of rampant water pollution not only from conventional but also from emerging contaminants, there is inadequate access to safe and affordable water for drinking and other domestic use by the local communities, especially in informal settlements and rural areas. To address this challenge and induce change, two points are considered here: (i) comprehensive monitoring of ...
