The group Enviromental Biology has a longstanding experience (since 1976) in the field of heavy metal uptake by plants, the effects of toxic metal concentrations on plants and the transfer of metals to the food chain. The group was involved in several projects concerning the zinc, cadmium and lead contamination in the region Balen, Lommel, Overpelt in the the zinc smelter contaminated area in the north-east of Belgium. They started with ...
Coordination chemistry aims to study the effect of ligand geometry and nature on the central metal ions. These are transition metals (3d, 4d or 5d), lanthanides (4f) and actinides (5f). The symmetry of coordination mainly determines the electronic structure of the metal ions and influences in this way the spectroscopic, electrochemical, thermodynamic and magnetic properties of the complexes. A lot of applications of coordination compounds are ...
The Neurosurgery specialism treats afflictions of the nervous system, the cranium and the spine. In adults, neurosurgery focuses mainly on the treatment of tumours, cranial trauma, brain haemorrhages, abnormal movements, pain or hormonal dysfunction of the Hypophysis. The service has expertise in the disease Von Hippel-Lindau.
To elucidate the role of connexin and pannexin signalling in health and disease with focus on the liver (VUB team) and the nervous system (UGent team).
The research group NuTec (contact: sonja.schreurs@xios.be) has research domains 'environmental energy research' and 'development and application of nuclear equipment'. Multidisciplinary research in an applied context is paramount in both domains. There from that environment, energy, security (chemical, toxicological, radio chemical, nuclear,...), economic feasibility, legislation and regulation are closely involved in this applied ...
