Impact of vaginal morbidity on sexual functioning in cervical cancer patients treated with neo-adjuvant chemotherapy followed by surgery. Ghent University
In Belgium, 600 women are yearly diagnosed with cervical cancer
(CX), with a peak around 45 years (sexually active at the time of
diagnosis). Treatment of limited CX consists of surgery, completed
by chemo-radiotherapy (C-RT) in case of high-risk of relapse.
Inoperable, locally advanced tumors are treated by C-RT and
brachytherapy. The 3-year local control is 73% to 94%. To increase
this, we have been ...

Sexual dimorphisms in pancreatic β-cell transcriptome and their implications for therapy KU Leuven
Diabetes currently affects 8% of the global population and continues to rise. The two main types of diabetes are Type 1 diabetes (T1D) caused by the auto-immune destruction of beta cells and Type 2 diabetes (T2D) characterized by the inability to respond to insulin in combination with beta cell dysfunction. The prevalence of both types of diabetes is higher in males than females. This can be explained by gender-associated differences in beta ...
Epithelial-mesenchymal transition: a new concept in pituitary tumor pathogenesis KU Leuven
The pituitary gland represents the core of our endocrine system and governs the fundamental processes of growth, metabolism, sexual maturation, procreation and stress response. Tumors in the pituitary occur frequently, and although typically benign, cause serious morbidity due to hormone overproduction (like in Cushing’s disease and acromegaly) and to compression effects because of local expansion and invasion into the gland and beyond ...
Stem Cell and Stromal Vascular Fraction Treatment for Penile Tunica Albuginea and Urethral Fibrosis KU Leuven
Fibrosis is a wound healing disorder and it is defined by the excessive accumulation of fibrous connective tissue, such as collagen and fibronectin, in and around inflamed or damaged tissue. Although collagen and fibronectin deposition is an indispensable and, typically, reversible part of wound healing, normal tissue repair can evolve into a progressively irreversible fibrotic response if the tissue injury is severe or repetitive or if the ...
