Interventions in the built and social environment improving elderly’s wellbeing in an activity-travel context Ghent University
Most western countries (such as Belgium) have been witnessing
prominent demographic ageing. Ageing often implies declined
functional capacities and hence declined capacity for travel. As travel
is imperative to live independently and maintain social ties, declined
capacity for travel is likely to adversely affect elderly’s wellbeing.
“Ageing in place” – without relocation – is a key strategy for coping

Interventions in the built and social environment improving elderly’s wellbeing in an activity-travel context Ghent University
Ageing often implies declined capacity for travel, which adversely effects independently living and thus affects elderly’s wellbeing. In this project, we investigate how physical and social aspects of the living environment affect activity travel behaviour of older adults, what the consequences are for their wellbeing, and how an age-friendly living environment can be built.

Towards a more fundamental understanding of the freeze-thaw risk in rocks: integration of material parameters and the ambient environment Ghent University
This project aims to upscale the results of former laboratory freezethaw
experiments to real-time field conditions. These results will help
in understanding the damaging mechanisms related to internal
freezing. Most studies of freeze-thaw risks focus either on durability
testing or on climate analysis. The big challenge is now to integrate
both approaches. Currently, several approaches to estimate the ...
