Combined exposure to (sub)clinical concentrations of foodborne bacterial toxins Ghent University
Cereulide, beauvericin and enniatins are selected because of their emerging character, public health relevance, extreme stability, omnipresence of respective microorganisms, possible accumulation in the body, and similarity in the chemical nature (cyclodepsipetides). Quantification and characterization of toxic effects will provide information necessary for proper prevention and intervention in human health protection. For this purpose novel ...
The consequences of high free fatty acid concentrations in the micro-environment of the oocyte and zygote on metabolic, genetic and epigenetic quality parameters of the pre-implantation embryo. University of Antwerp
Geographical concentrations of crime and disorder: consequences for the attitudes of civilians against punishment and the criminal justice system. Ghent University
In this research the influence of concentrations of disorder in municipalities on distrust in the criminal justice system and the call for harsher punishment is examined. To this end we perform a number of preliminary exploratory analyses in order to develop a new measuring instrument and to get an insight in determinants of distrust and punitivity.
The direct consequences of elevated free fatty acids concentrations in the blood on the viability of ovarian follicles and the oocyte's developmental capacity: an animal model. University of Antwerp
Carbon Concentrating Mechanisms: Linking CO2 uptake to growth and development in the green seaweed Ulva mutabilis Ghent University
Seaweeds have substantial ecological function and economic potential and yet they have been largely ignored in biotechnological research. I have developed a molecular toolkit to help make Sea Lettuce (Ulva mutabilis) a model organism for multicellular green algae. My research has resulted in the efficient expression of transgenes in Ulva and I am now optimizing site-directed mutagenesis using CRISPR/Cas9. I propose to use this molecular ...
Aging and movement control: towards a multimodal imaging approach for the study of brain structure, function, and connectivity KU Leuven
A transforming Cultural Industry: analysis of the evolution of the Flemish Music Industry since 1990. University of Antwerp
Transitional models in suicidal thoughts and behaviors - multivariate longitudinal designs. KU Leuven
Background: suicidal thoughts and behaviors (STB) are common in the society, with high mortality and a significant burden for society. Although prevalence is well-known, knowledge on the behavioral dynamics that drive the suicidal process and its timing are unknown.
Aims: to predict STB transitions among psychiatric patients with repeated visits to the ER(i.e. STB incidence among those without prior STB and STB persistence among those ...

State of the art
Natively, cells reside in a complex microenvironment, called the extracellular matrix (ECM), where they receive numerous signals (chemical, mechanical, biological) that allow them to maintain proper function; however, cells can be damaged and these interactions disrupted as a result of injury or disease. To address this problem, tissue engineering is developing as an emerging field with the ambitious aim to ...
