Algebraic Effect Handlers: Harnessing the fundamental power of effects KU Leuven
Today’s society runs on software and it has programming languages to thank for that, not only because they are the means by which software is created, but also because programming language research has enabled the exponential growth of software development that we have seen over the past decades. Unfortunately, it is becoming increasingly clearer that current software development practice cannot sustain the growth rate that society demands. ...
Numerical modelling of near-field and far-field wake effects of a farm of wave energy coverters using irregular short-crested waves and the effect of wind regeneration in time-dependent wave propagation models. Ghent University
Designing a Wave Energy Converters (WECs) park layout requires the study of the interaction between the devices of a 'farm' layout (near-field effects) and the influence of wake effects behind a WEC-park (far-field effects). These park effects will be investigated by means of MILDwave, a numerical wave propagation model, which uses a sponge layer technique in order to simulate absorption and radiation of a converter.
The cascade effect of PFAAs. Study of the transcriptional response of Canaries to PFAAs and the relationships with effects in successive levels of biological organization. University of Antwerp
Environmental (and human health) risk approach as an integrated framework to study the occurrence and effects of microplastics in the marine environment - Ecologiclas aspect of microplastics Ghent University
GHentToxLab - UGent has proven and internationally recognized expertise in the field of microplastic detection and monitoring and in the evaluation of the uptake and (adverse) effects of these particles in biota. It also has long-standing and extensive research and regulatory expertise/experience in the area of environmental risk assessment of chemicals and other contaminants. The publication record of GhentToxLab is available on ...
Anlaysis of the genetic defect in melorheostosis and the study of the molecular and biological effects of LEMD3 haploinsufficiency Ghent University
In 2004, we demonstrated that loss-of-function mutations in LEMD3 can lead to osteopoikilosis, the Buschke-Ollendorff syndrome (BOS) and non-sporadic melorheostosis. This project aims 1) to identify the causal genetic defect in sporadic melorheostosis though a candidate gene approach, and 2) to study the biological effects of LEMD3 haploinsufficiency and the pathways that lead to the hyperostotic lesions in these skeletal dysplasias.
How does color affect the thermal properties of feathers? Ghent University
Most studies on the colors of animal integument have focused on their roles in camouflage or sexual signaling, but they can also have significant thermal effects. We propose to quantify these thermal effects and determine how nanostructuring that produces bright, iridescent colors affects them. This research will help elucidate evolution of animal coloration and may inspire the design of novel multifunctional materials.
