Can I see some ID, please? Police discretion in cannabis-related ID checks and stop and searches, and their effect on police legitimacy. An ethnographic study in 2 Belgian police forces. Ghent University
The way police act in their daily police practice against the possession and use of cannabis, the most
commonly used illicit drug, is a controversial story, both in the academic - and in the political world.
The role and function of the police in the fight against cannabis remains very unclear, both with the
police and with the users. Although there is a lot of research into cannabis use and the harms done
by cannabis ...
Where police patrol: Preventing crime through effective police patrol strategies? Ghent University
The success of routine police patrol in deterring crime is unclear and existing police patrol routing strategies are naive. Developing and implementing effective police patrol transcends the boundaries of criminology and geography. Here, we adopt an interdisciplinary approach to police patrol and use police patrol vehicle movement data to evaluate police patrol efficacy and develop complex police patrol routing algorithms.

Nationalizing Police Intelligence in Belgium (1918-1961): Democratization Processes and Bureaucratic Knowledge Practices Ghent University
The project focuses on the history of police nationalization in Belgium between 1918 and 1961. We examine how and why police centralization increased during this period, in a context of democratization and pacification of social relations on the one hand, and social crises (wars, strikes, etc.) on the other. Furthermore, the project investigates the impact and the role of public security rationales in the socio-political history of Belgium. ...

I acknowledge the interplay between individual and contextual factors and their combined impact, as well as the possible social transmission of physical violence within professional social networks on the likelihood of physical violence against police. Theoretical models based on previous research represent a fractured explanation and do not fully capture the ...

Evaluating the effectiveness of big data policing: a randomised controlled trial in three Belgian police departments Ghent University
‘Big data policing’ is an innovative intelligence-led policing strategy making use of historical data to forecast when and where there is a high risk of new crime events, with the objective to use police resources more efficiently and proactively, and ultimately reduce crime rates. Big data policing applications commonly analyse data using machine learning algorithms, with the aim to “learn” from past crime patterns to be able to forecast ...
