Speech Acts and the Narrative Construction of consciousness in the work of Ivo Michiels Ghent University
This project aims for an integrated narratological approach of speech acts and the representation of consciousness in experimental texts by the Flemish author Ivo Michiels. The theory of speech acts will be integrated in a cognitive narratological framework for the study of conciousness in fiction. In this way, the effects of experimental texts can be articulated more precisely.
Spectacular Claudian: Immersive scenes in late antique poetry Ghent University
My project focuses on the immersive potential of epic scenes involving Roman spectacles in late Latin poetry. By spectacles I refer to the known popular Roman events, such as chariot races, hunting games, gladiatorial fights, musical or stage competitions. In particular, I focus on two influential poets from the end of the 4th and the beginning of the 5th century CE, Claudian and Prudentius.

Between compassion and solidarity. Constellations of empathy in novels of social criticism (1848-1980) Ghent University
The project examines the construction of empathy in Flemish novels of social criticism (1848-1980). The corpus consists of novels which strategically evoke empathy for and within the working class to criticize perceived social injustice. A cognitive and narratological analysis of these constellations of empathy allows us to chart the developments and the coherence of this strong tradition of social criticism .
