Cognitive correlates of mathematical difficulties in children with mild intellectual disabilities

Studies in typically developing children have shown that the representation of numerical magnitudes represents a key factor for successful mathematical development. To date, few studies have examined this representation of numerical magnitudes in children with intellectual disabilities. The present research project tries to investigate this issue. More specifically, we aim to examine whether children with mild intellectual disabilities show a delay or a deficit in the development of numerical magnitude representation. We aim to find out whether childeren with mild intellectual disabilities have difficulties with understanding non-symbolic representations of numerical magnitudes, with mapping symbols (numbers) into the magnitudes they represent, or with both. This information is crucial for developing specific remedial tools and interventions that fosfor mathematics development in children with mild intellectual disabilities.
