Edipo clarividente y Ariadna como hilo: reescritura y proyección transnacional en Cuaderno de navegación de Bryce Echenique

Book Contribution - Chapter

In the diptych Cuaderno de navegación en un sillón Voltaire, Bryce Echenique rewrites two classical myths and presents them as complementary. La vida exagerada de Martín Romaña alters the Oedipus myth, connecting the protagonist’s oedipal complex to the nostalgia for his Peruvian homeland during his exile in Paris and also to his mother’s literary ideals. Allowing him to criticize an inauthentic left-oriented discourse, which was common during the student revolt, these values change Oedipus’ blindness into clairvoyance. Since the hero’s acuteness serves as a guide for the understanding of the whole book, it links up with the Ariadne myth in El hombre que hablaba de Octavia de Cádiz. In this novel, Octavia shows the hero how to get out of his existential labyrinth opening up the way for a literature that focuses on artistic refinement and the transnational projection of Latin America.
