Processor simulation is useful to evaluate various processor configurations without the hardware being available; simulation is therefore heavily used during the design process of a new processor. Unfortunately, detailed processor simulation is very slow (5 to 6 orders of magnitude slower than native execution), which reduces the number of configurations that can be explored in a limited time budget.
