This PhD project is an integral part of the Horizon 2020 research project SignON, which unites 17 European partners in a research project that aims to facilitate the exchange of information among deaf and hard of hearing, and hearing individuals across Europe by developing automatic sign language translation tools. Recent machine learning methods based on neural transformer architectures have greatly improved the state-of-the art in natural ...
People who are deaf or hard of hearing face the challenge of interacting with others in real-life situations and are often excluded from accessing information in society. The EU-funded SignON project aims to develop a mobile application that will translate between different European sign and verbal languages. Signed language research has both societal and scientific relevance, the study of signed languages complements the study of spoken languages and as such forms an important part of the ...
The requested project aims to explore the cognitive load of sign language interpreting and compare it with oral interpreting. The premise aims to establish whether sign language interpreters face a comparable cognitive load, despite the expectedly lower interference, and whether the cognitive load changes for sign language interpreters when they are retour interpreting.
