This is a survey of the phenomenon of non-religious mysticism in modern French literature and philosophy. We describe the historical context and determine the importance of immanence/transcendence and sense/non-sense in non-religious mysticism. Special attention is given to Romain Rolland, Marcel Lecomte, Jacques Masui, Philippe Jaccottet, Emil Cioran, Roger Caillois, Albert Camus and André Comte-Sponville.
