The influence of magnetic fields from electricity transmission on fauna and flora

Book - Report

Abstract:This report aims to inventory and interpret scientific studies dealing with the possible effects of extremely low frequency (ELF) magnetic fields (MF) on fauna and flora. The magnetic fields come from the transmission and distribution of electricity. For this purpose, more than 250 studies on vertebrates, plants and insects were reviewed in detail for study quality and content. The overall conclusion is that several species are able to sense magnetic fields and changes of magnetic fields (magnetoreception). However, no consensus can be found for most of the properties studied as to whether or not anthropogenic radiation with a frequency of 50 Hz (or 60 Hz), such as that emanating from high-voltage power lines, has health implications. Further follow-up research is therefore recommended.
