The importance of citizen science: research, policy and management around invasive alien species

Invasive alien species are high on the nature policy agenda due to their impact on biodiversity and the management costs they entail. Nature volunteers are an important link in the supervision of alien species. Volunteers like to report new species, but once the species are more general, motivation often weakens. Nevertheless, lasting attention is also required for these species profiles. With this contribution we want to illustrate the importance of volunteer data on alien species on the basis of applications in research, policy and management in Belgium.
