Guidelines for Fauna Facilities in Infrastructure

Book - Report

This guide is intended for employees of provinces, Rijkswaterstaat, Prorail, Agency for Roads and Traffic, municipalities, water boards, consultancy firms and contractors involved in the infrastructure defragmentation. It provides guidance throughout the process of identifying a bottleneck in the fragmentation of nature values and solving it, including the construction, inspection, maintenance and monitoring of the use of the facility.
The Guide deals with general matters and the processes used to achieve a good facility. It includes background information on road fragmentation and the legal and policy framework for fragmentation. The application of Systems Engineering is also discussed. The appendices contain the requirements that animals set for fauna facilities and examples of facilities. The information on the requirements is in line with the Basic Specification Ecopassages of the Department of Public Works and the ProRail Design Regulations for Fauna Facilities. The examples serve as a source of inspiration; every situation requires customisation for a good solution.

The guideline contains a lot of information for different target groups and for different phases in the process to achieve a well and sustainably functioning fauna facility. This is described in detail in part 1 of the guide. The approach according to Systems Engineering is the common thread for the description of the process.
Part 2 deals with the functional requirements of the various target species and gives examples of fauna facilities.
