Good Things Come in Threes. Francesco Filelfo’s Three Consolations to Jacopo Antonio Marcello

On the first of January 1461, eight-year-old Valerio Marcello died in a palazzo along the Canal Grande in Venice. The Italian humanist Francesco Filelfo sent three consolatory works to Jacopo Antonio Marcello, the boy’s father: a long Latin prose consolation, a Greek poem, and a Latin poem, written in the name of his patron, Francesco Sforza. This article offers a contextualization and literary comparison of the three writings as well as a critical edition of the Latin poem.
