Evaluation of exposure to PAHs - inventory study

Book - Report

Subtitle:WP 6: Bepaling van de blootstelling
This report includes the elaboration of WP 6 in the project Evaluation of exposure to PAH's - inventory study. WP 6 aims to estimate the exposure of the Flemish population to PAHs in the environment based on the information obtained in the previous work packages. Attention is also paid to exposure from non-environmental sources.
WP 6 uses the information:
- WP 1 - 2: inventory of existing measurement data, determination of guide substances;
- WP 4: concentration modelling
- WP 5: environmental measurements
In order to determine the exposure, a conceptual model was drawn up, which lists the different relevant environmental compartments and shows the relationships between these compartments. On the basis of this conceptual model, a translation is made into a mathematical model that allows the calculation of transfers between environmental compartments and the subsequent quantification of human exposure. Environmental exposure is discussed in relation to dominant sources, uncertainties and gaps. A comparison is also made with non-environmental sources.
In chapter 2, the objectives of the project are explained in advance and a summary is given of the activities and results in the other work packages. Chapter 3 of the report explains the conceptual model and discusses the information (measurement data, modelled data) available from the previous work packages, the additional information collected and the methodology used to fill in the conceptual model. Chapter 4 describes the elaboration of the mathematical model in terms of model equations and parameter values. In chapter 5 the calculation results are presented and discussed, and a comparison with available literature data follows. Finally, chapter 6 presents the conclusions, knowledge gaps and policy recommendations for the entire project.
Summary tables of data are included in the text of the report. All figures, and detailed tables with data, are included in separate appendices.
