SRP-Onderzoekszwaartepunt: Towards Exploratory and Time-Resolved Structural Biology (SRP75)

The advancement of modern human and animal healthcare requires a deep understanding of the millions of biological, chemical and physical processes that are at work in an organisms’ cells and tissues. These insights describe the healthy functioning of cells, and guide us in the development of therapies in case of disease. A thorough structural characterization of the many molecules that make up and cooperate inside and across cells is indispensable in this. Different methodologies are required to gain a structural view from the cell or tissue down to the individual proteins and nucleic acids inside. In this project we focus on new technological advances in sample preparation, cryo-electron microscopy and deep learning to help us resolve the disparity between information obtained at the level of the cell and that obtained at the level of its component molecules, and to do so in a way that we can follow these molecules in action over time.
