Sharing Logistics

Sharing Logistics

The standstill of assets in the logistic sector is very costly. The amount of assets and services that are not 100 % utilized during the entire day is endless. With the project ‘Sharing Logistics’, VIL is striving towards a more efficient occupancy rate of these logistic assets through building a web platform and by matching the supply to the demand.

With ‘Sharing Logistics’, VIL will apply the principal of the sharing economy through a virtual platform to the logistical B2B market. The purpose is to develop a system in which companies can utilize each other’s unused assets and services without any pursuit of profit. In other words, the rental prize of a certain asset/service cannot exceed the made costs. The purpose is that the owner can reduce part of costs of standstill/vacancy.

VIL will start this project by mapping companies’ logistical assets and services that are not utilized during the day. The project targets logistical assets that are mostly very capital intensive, not only in purchase but also in maintenance, like forklifts, aerial platforms, meeting rooms, straddle carriers, cooled spaces, sweepers, unused warehouse spaces, safety personnel, reach stackers, terminal tractors, trainers, car parks, etc. Renting such assets is no solution as well. Too expensive, a long lease, the physical distance that is too big, the material that is not always available on the right time, not the specific kind of material, etc. These are just a few examples not to rent.

Goal

The focus of this VIL project is to achieve an efficient, finished web platform for the participating companies to contact each other in a clear and fast way and to establish a transaction. This has to be done without to much fuss and paperwork, with attention to the juridical and insurance aspect of the case.

Specific activities

·        End-to-end analysis of which assets/services of the participating companies are best suited

·        Making an inventory of the existing systems and best practices of knowledge institutions and technology providers

·        Testing the juridical and insurance technical aspect of the case

·        Researching possible application fields and conditions in different industries

·        Mapping possible cases with the participating companies

·        Working out a functional analysis to achieve an operational webplatform

·        Working out a proof of concept with multiple project participants

·        Calculating the ROI

·        Analyzing the test results and determine the lessons learned
