Novel Design Paradigms for Beyond CMOS Devices - Modeling and Benchmarking of Spin-based Technologies
In this work, I explore the circuit design possibilities and performance potentials of emerging non-charge-based technologies. The main goal is to identify technologies that can surpass contemporary CMOS technology in at least one aspect of power/energy consumption, performance, and area/cost. The identified technology would also need to be paired with specific applications and can then serve as a replacement or complement to CMOS designs. The main technologies investigated in this PhD are spin-based, such as spin wave devices, spin torque majority gates. Since, these technologies are not mature and well-understood enough for reliable design and fabrication, a large part of my work is devoted in simulating proposed devices on a physical level and extracting useful device parameters that can be used for circuit evaluation.
