Project

Enhancing equal opportunities trough participation of families and schools in basic skill formation.

Although there is a massive basic education expansion in Tanzania, children up to grade seven still do not master even the basic reading literacy skills. While all attention goes to the role of the teachers, the current project focuses on the involvement of parents in their childrens education and learning. This project aims to bridge two, often separate worlds of children: the family and the school. To reach this goal we will develop an intervention that promotes active participation of parents in the educational system through a parent-teacher partnership. In this way, children may acquire basic skills, regardless of socio-economic status and gender, which may strengthen their future development. Our research focuses on the evaluation of this intervention, both on the (a) process level, and (b) on the level of outcomes in children, parents and teachers, by means of a quasi-experimental design.
