Death and political culture: funerary practices of political elites in Belgium 1850-1940 (FWOTM599)

This project discusses the relationship between 'political culture(s)' and the practices surrounding the death of 100 leading public figures in Belgium during the years 1850 to 1940, which is examined at three institutional levels.
The first level of analysis is devoted to ten royal funerals. The second level focuses on funerals of leaders of government, speakers of the Houses of Parliament and prominent persons who received the honour of a state funeral. The third level investigates the funerary culture manifested around the death of the mayors of Ghent, Brussels, Antwerp and Liège in order to reconstruct an urban liberal political culture.
