Project

Public acceptability of a climate tax shift

This PhD project is linked to the E4BEL project (Brain – Belspo, 2022-2026). The project will investigate existing trade-offs in equity, economic performance, and public acceptability of a climate tax shift. The PhD project carried out by HIVA will focus on the topic of public acceptability of a climate tax shift. After an exploration of the state-of-the-art, the PhD candidate will coordinate and carry out two large surveys to gauge the support for several climate tax shift scenarios within the Belgium population. Next to the measurement of the support for the objectives and the instrument of the tax shift as such, it will also explore the determinants and the conditions of the support, using choice experiments. Finally, the PhD project will contribute to the interpretation of and the possible policy responses to the equity-efficiency-acceptability trade-offs identified in the course of the project.
