Autophagy in the vasculature

Book Contribution - Chapter

Cardiovascular disease continues to be the leading cause of death worldwide, which drives the urgent need for novel therapies. Autophagy has been found to play an essential role in maintaining a healthy vasculature. In different vascular pathologies such as atherosclerosis, medial vascular calcification, arterial stiffness, and hypertension, autophagic flux is dysregulated. These alterations can be present in both downstream and upstream components of the autophagic machinery and affect the vascular cells, i.e., endothelial cells and vascular smooth muscle cells, differently. Emerging evidence indicates that rescuing or modulating autophagy could be a promising therapeutic strategy in many vascular pathologies.
