Aristotle on natural motion of simple bodies
For Aristotle, having nature as an internal principle for changes is the key feature that distinguishes natural bodies from unnatural ones. Following this, Aristotle argues that all natural bodies have certain natural changes. This research project proposes to study a particular type of natural change – natural motion of elements. Through studying Aristotle’s discussion in Physics and De Caelo, this project aims at examining whether or not Aristotle has a coherent view of natural motion. The main research will consist of two parts: in the first part I will examine Aristotle’s claim that every simple body has an ordered motion in accord to its nature; in the second part, I will offer a detailed study of natural motions of the celestial element and terrestrial elements.
