Closing the EU Gap in battery production (FWOTM1004)

Closing the EU Gap in battery production will be focused on
understanding battery manufacturing and upscaling processes
together with degradation and new emerging technologies. Battery
Manufacturing is a pending issue at European level. Now the
European commission with the Battery2030+ initiative and the
Batteries Europe emerging framework, all efforts from universities,
research centers and industry should smartly joint forces to create
our European Battery Manufacturing Industry. However, this
challenge needs to provide firm and well stablished steps to make a
real progress forward.

The project aims to achieve pure scientific understanding of battery
manufacturing and upscaling. The project will start by learning from
already a more mature technology, NMC 8-1-1, continuing into new
generation technologies NMC 1-1-1, using this as a bridge in order to
first understand errors which should be detected and avoided. In
addition, new emerging technologies like solid state should also be
added so as to tackle and develop a manufacturing and upscaling
process ready to use for all possible battery technologies. Moreover,
by testing the coin cells or upscaled cells at an early moment of their
life, the different chemical reactions at the beginning of life can be
monitored and may lead to deeper understanding to these manufacturing problems which can be easily recovered or avoided.
