Project

Translational research on colon transport in Chronic Kidney Disease

Structural and functional characterization of colonic tissue obtained from patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and from rodent animal models with the aforementioned induced pathology. Samples will be studied with different laboratory techniques including permeability analysis using Ussing chambers, relative gene and protein expression with qPCR and Western Blotting, among the others. A structural and functional characterization of transport mechanisms involved in metabolism and systemic excretion of uremic toxins of gut microbial origin such as indole and p-cresol uptake will be the main focus of the project.
