Two-way meso–micro coupling for wind farm planning, forecasting and nowcasting

In 2018, Belgium doubled its offshore wind zones to a capacity of 4GW. Recently, it was discovered that at this scale, wind farms affect mesoscale weather systems, with a negative impact of up to 6% on annual energy, and up to 30% on hourly production. These effects are not included in current windfarm planning and forecasting tools. This PhD project contributes to the development of an open-source planning and forecasting platform that includes mesoscale feedback, centered around Belgium's offshore wind zones. The focus is on the development of an efficient simulation tool, based on high-fidelity LES results.
