Resistance to powdery mildew on parsley (MEELDAUWPETERSELIE)

This research project focuses on resistance to powdery mildew on parsley. In field experiments we see genetic differences in resistance against powdery mildew. Through recurrent selection we try to develop a tolerant (resistant) variety of parsley. Because parsley is a fresh herb, only few chemicals are allowed for use in controlling this disease.

Because powdery mildew is an obligate parasite we aim to provoke infection under controlled circumstances (in plastic tunnels). In this way we discriminate between the sensitive and more resistant half-sib families. The more resistant plants out of the best families consist the basis of breeding towards a new variety.

Research results about the epidemiology of powdery mildew and the growth of the fungus on plants of parsley in isolation leads to a useful protocol for further investigation and screening. The final result is a new, powdery mildew resistant variety of parsley.
